BBC women’s player of the year 2015 and Nigerian female highest goal scorer Asisat Lamina Oshoala now plays for Liverpool Ladies. She speaks about her new club and other issues with Esther Egbe.
How has it been since you were crowned Africa’s best female football player?
It’s been very good and challenging. It’s not an easy to remain on top. You have to keep up working
Did you envisage your sudden rise to fame?
That is the dream of every hustler or footballer---to be rewarded greatly. So I am not really surprised because I trained hard and I’m still working so hard to maintain the goal of my talent.
The move to Liverpool, can you call it a dream come true?
Yes, playing for Liverpool is a dream come true because I have always loved to play for the team.
How have you been able to settle down so quickly in the club?
I'm really lucky with the team I chose because I didn't find it difficult settling down over there. It was God’s hands.
How competitive is your position, ‘centre forward’, at Liverpool?
It’s not a big deal. God has always been my help. I’m doing my best.
What was the feeling like when you scored on your debut?
I felt really happy about it. It was great proving my skill and showing my talent.
Did you think you were going to score that early?
Yes, but sorry I don't disclose my personal assignments
Is there a target in the new season?
It’s to make it big for my new club and make Nigeria and my fans proud again.
How do you relax these days since you’re now a ‘big’ girl?
I'm not a big girl. It's only Allah that lifts people up. I still relax the same way.
How have you been coping with the men that have been running after you for your huge success?
Well I know what I want. Men are no distraction to me.
Do you think your team will get to the final?
Yes, I believe my team will get to the final because we are working very hard.
How are your Liverpool players?
They are very nice and hardworking ladies who are ready to work with me. The ladies and crew are wonderful people. They are so accommodating.
What should your fans expect in your next match?
My fans should expect nothing less than my very best, a good game.
Who is your favorite musician or artiste---local or international?
My best music artiste is Davido. He is very creative, and he make a lot of sense.
Who is your favouriteNollywood actor or actress?
My favouriteNollywood star is Uche Jumbo. She’s got the talent and carriage of a super actress.
Are you really dating Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo?
There has been news flying here and there that I am dating Kenneth Omeruo. He is just like my elder brother and mentor. We are not dating.
