Swan Kalio cup got off on Friday

The 2017 edition of the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup got off to a great start on Friday at the Sharks Football Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The opening game was attended by well-meaning individuals including the National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Mr Honour Sirawoo as well as the Vice Chairman of the Rivers State Football Association, Chief Ominiokuma Kile.

The ceremonial kick-off of the competition was performed by the son of late Henry Kalio, David who was also in attendance throughout the duration of the first two games.

On the pitch, defending Champions Tide Newspapers hung on to Francis Edokoor's strike on the dot of half time to edge Wave FM by a lone goal. Tide's ageless goalkeeper Gabriel Nwanetanya who preserved his side's lead with a string of impressive saves was voted Man of the Match and thus went home with some mouth watering incentives.

In the day's other game, the tough talking Cool/Wazobia/Info were once again dazed by a composed performance by FRCN Treasure FM who beat the Ufuoma Egbamuno-led side by 2 goals to nothing.

Stanley Muoghalu tapped home in the first half before Okey Onwugbonu rounded the goalkeeper to add his team's second in the second half of the game. Treasure FM's midfielder, Edward Ukpethu was rewarded as the Most Valuable Player.

Action resumes on Monday with two games in Group B. Rivers State Television, RSTV will face AIT/Raypower at 3pm while Radio UST will do battle with last edition's beaten finalists Garden City Radio.
