AFRICANS ABROAD: NWSL Update:
Francisca Ordega scored the opener for Washington Spirit in a 1–1 draw with Chicago Red Stars on Saturday 17 June as club action across the globe resumed after the June international break.
The Nigerian star striker struck in the 42nd minute, collecting a long ball from Cheyna Williams, racing past Chicago defence before sinking a low shot past keeper Alyssa Naeher to score her third goal of the season.
Spirit were on the verge of bagging their first away win of the season when Christen Press was brought down in the box and went on to covert the ensuing penalty in the 82nd minute to restore parity.
Back in Houston, South Africa WNT skipper Janine Van Wyk returned to the starting lineup for Houston Dash, playing the entire match in a tough 4–2 defeat to Orlando Pride.
Marta was involved in all four of Orlando’s goals, registering a brace as well as two assists to welcome reigning World Women’s Player of the Year Carli Lloyd back to the Dash from Manchester City with a defeat.
Elsewhere, holders North Carolina Courage bagged a comfortable 3–1 win over Boston Breakers to stay top of the log while Sky Blue handed Portland Thorns their first home loss of the season in front of a solid crowd of 16,736 fans.
