Nigerian Under-23 team triumphed over the Sudanese 5 goals to nil it ended, what's your take on the match sir?
*Barr. Akinwunmi* : Honestly, it was a very impressive match, putting aside whether their opponents lacked strength or not, watching our play, watching the cohesion amongst the players, the speed with which they turned defenses to attack, it was very impressive. I have a lot of hope and faith in that team I must say.
Looking at that team six home based players started the match, all from different categories our Nigerian leagues, what will make of that, knowing that for quite some time now we haven't seen home based players in our national teams?
*Barr. Akinwunmi* *: I do not believe in the issue of home based or foreign based. I keep on emphasizing on this, if you're good, you're good regardless of where you play and if a coach is discerning, he can see a player in what ever League he plays in and choose him, I think what the coaching crew did was choose the best players that they could find and are available and worked with.
For me I think it is derogatory the way we refer to the home based players. It's s not like they are not literally home based, for me personally I don't like the term because it sounds like some form of low ranking ,they are very good players ,they played in the national team and they played fantastic .
Lastly, a little digression completely from national team to Governor Okowa's pre-season tournament. The Governor has hosted the national team on countless occasions, now a pre-season tournament, what can you say of his excellency Governor Okowa of Delta state?
You See, the fact that I am here present at the opening ceremony of this tournament, tells a lot of what we think of Governor Okowa, the Government and the people of Delta State.
It takes a lot and it takes a man with a big heart in these times to host the national team and to host back to back events, which includes the pre-season tournament. It is very important that we honour him and appreciate him as well and let him know that we love what he is doing for us and we are not taking it for granted. He is a good man and we hold him in very high esteem.
