Our very own African cherry, also known as African star apple is a celebrity o but we don’t know because the fruit is so common. This is why wisdom dictates that you should not judge a book by its cover or in this case, do not judge a fruit by its dark yellowish colour or semi-sour taste (sometimes, you can luckily find a perfectly sweet one). Agbalumo is blessed with so much that you are about to discover.
Nutritionally, it contains more vitamin C than oranges. It is an amazing source of anti-oxidants that ease stress. It is also said to be sufficient for reducing hunger pangs as it is a good snacking fruit.
In fact, a study carried out at Covenant University revealed that this cherry is capable of lowering blood sugar levels and cholesterol which ultimately prevents or manages heart problems. Thus, this fruit comes highly recommended for heart patients. Additionally, the bark, leaves, and roots are proven to be useful for treating cough, malaria and yellow fever.
In some parts of Nigeria, the seeds are used to cure skin and vaginal infections and this wonder-fruit which is sadly often relegated to the background, is useful for losing weight as it is rich in fibre that keeps you from eating too much and so, you lose weight. However, a note of caution: moderation is required in the consumption of this fruit because excess could lead to heartburn.
All in all, let us get back to the days when we enjoyed this fruit so much that we even used to form chewing gum with the flesh (lol). You should keep eating this fruit and don’t let the kids around you miss out on the agbalumo experience.
