Journalists in Bayelsa are set for action in the inaugural 6 kilometer road race organised by the state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.
Already, scores of pen pushers have registered and had their medicals ahead of the event.Journalists turned up in their numbers on Monday to register and have their body examined by a team led by renowned medical practitioner, Dr. McEteli Daniel of the World Health Organisation as more have indicated interest to register on Tuesday.
Ahead of the race, the National President of SWAN, Honour Sirawoo is to lead a strong team of officials to Yenagoa for the event. Commissioner for Sport Development in the state Perekiye Buruboyefe is to flag off the race at the INEC junction along Mbiama-Yenagoa Road at 7am prompt on Wed August 30.
The race will terminate at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex with dignitaries from government including the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jonathan Obuebite and the private sector as well as Non Governmental actors due to attend.
Winners of the race in the men and women's events will smile to the bank with #15,000 each while runners up will earn #10,000 each as bronze medalists will get #5,000 each for their efforts.
The Alambo Datonye led SWAN Exco and the Loveday Herbert led Organising Committee say security and other logistics arrangements have been finalized to have a hitch free event with the Police, Federal Road Safety Commission and medical personnel on hand to ensure a successful race.
