NDLEA REACT ON BABA SUWE CASE AND LEGAL PRACTITIONERS

Since the Abuja court had granted the NDLEA an extension to keep popular comedian Alhaji Babatunde Omidina aka Baba Suwe for 21 days now.
The decision come after the NDLEA operatives claimed news scan have revealed that there is still more drugs in Baba Suwe’s body.

The NDLEA arrested Omidina while he was about to board a plane to Paris at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, he was arrested and placed under “observation” after a scanning device indicated that he had ingested substances suspected to be hard drugs.

The comedian has since remained under close observation at the NDLEA detention center. The NDLEA said they kept him to until he excretes the narcotic drugs from his system.

NDLEA spokesperson, Mitchel ofoyeju told National Daily newspaper they have still keeping a close check on Baba Suwe  due to results from the scans conducted on the comedian.

According to the interview Mitchell Ofoyeju had with our reporter before the Baba Suwa’s case, he said the organisation was established for the purpose of controlling the abuse of drugs in the society or the country. Drug abuse is an organize crime, we have from fear of consuming country they come to country like Nigerian, they don’t produce but assistant country that produce to get it across to the country the take drugs. When the drugs get to Nigerian it is repackaged, so it is organise they have established natural drugs track in the fight against drugs and the Chairman has not been sacked.

As for Baba Suwa’s case, he is still under investigation, he only went for leave for few days, but now he is back on duty to attend to anybody, when asked what if Baba Suwa is innocent of the allegation, he reply was let us wait till then. I think it is rather too early to say Baba Suwa is blameless.

A legal practitioner said S.21 the NDLEA ACT, CAP N30 LFN 2004 Prohibits exportation of Narcotic Drugs and psychotropic substances. A person who violates this provision will be liable to a term of imprisonment which will be determined by other circumstances such as the person’s criminal record and the quantity of the drugs.

Gboyega said legal practitioner implication of carrying drugs, the one who is caught with drugs should be sentenced to imprisonment.

Another Lawyer said that if the comedian is not innocent, he should be sent straight to prisons.

Decree Number 48 of January l990 established a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to eliminate the growing, processing, manufacturing, selling, exporting, and trafficking of hard drugs, and the decree prescribed stiffer penalties for convicted offenders.
